Frames

Frames

Yes, we prioritise ease and flexibility, so every frame comes with the necessary hanging hardware attached or included.

  • Small frames up to 25x30cm (10x12”) feature black hanging clips on the backing board that swivel for portrait or landscape orientation. These clips are pre-attached, allowing you to hang the frame straight out of the box. They also include a strut back for tabletop display.
  • Larger frames come with D-rings – typically two – so you can choose the orientation. You can hang them directly on wall hooks or attach a cord/wire if preferred.
  • Very large or heavy frames include heavy-duty hangers, or we’ll provide guidance on secure installation.

Trade clients with specific hardware requirements, such as security hangers, can request custom fittings when ordering. In most cases, you’ll be able to hang your frame securely in either orientation with the hardware provided.

We offer made to measure frames in any size you need, from standard dimensions to fully custom measurements down to the millimetre. Some of the most common sizes include:

  • Small: 10x15cm, 13x18cm, 20x25cm (4x6″, 5x7″, 8x10″)
  • Medium: 28x35cm (11x14″), 40x50cm (16x20″)
  • Large: 46x61cm, 61x91cm (18x24″, 24x36″)
  • A-series paper sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, etc. (A4 is 21x29.7cm, A3 is 29.7x42cm)

If your artwork doesn’t fit a standard size, you can input custom dimensions when ordering. We can produce anything from tiny frames to oversized ones for large posters or artwork. Extremely large frames may ship unassembled or with acrylic instead of glass for safety, but otherwise, there are virtually no size limitations.

Our largest standard ready-made frame is 100x140cm (39x27.5”), but we can produce larger frames as custom orders. However, there are some key considerations:

  • Structural integrity: Thinner mouldings may not support very large frames, especially in our lowest price bands. We often recommend sturdier frame profiles for larger dimensions.
  • Glazing options: Standard glass becomes heavy and fragile at larger sizes. For oversized frames, we typically suggest specialist acrylic for safety and weight management, though this comes at a higher cost.
  • Shipping constraints: Couriers have size limits, so extra-large frames may require special freight handling or be shipped without glazing for local fitting.

We can produce frames over 1.2x0.8m and even 2m long in sections, but feasibility depends on the design and materials. If you need an oversized frame, let us know the dimensions, and we’ll advise on the best approach.

Frames are measured by their inside dimensions, meaning the size of the artwork or mount that fits inside. For example, a 40x50cm (16x20″) frame holds a 40x50cm (16x20″) image inside it.

The outside dimensions (the total size of the frame, including the moulding) will always be larger and vary depending on the frame style. A wider moulding results in a larger overall size than a narrow one for the same internal opening.

When ordering, focus on the size of the artwork – we cut the glass, mount and backing to fit it. If you’re measuring for wall space, you may want to consider the frame’s total external size instead.

A small portion of your image will be covered by the frame rebate (the lip that holds the glass) or by the mount (if used). This is necessary to keep the artwork securely in place.

  • With a mount: We typically allow a 2-3mm overlap on each side to prevent the image from slipping through.
  • Without a mount: The inner lip of the frame will overlap the edges slightly for stability.

If your image has important details at the edges, consider:

  • Float mounting: The image sits on top of a backing with visible edges, using spacers or a mount around it.
  • Printing slightly larger and trimming if needed.
  • Letting us know your preferences: We can adjust the overlap if required.

Our system accounts for standard overlaps when cutting mounts, but if you have specific requirements, just include a note with your order.

Our frame sizes refer to the glass size/inner frame size, meaning the exact size of the artwork that will fit inside.

How to measure:

  1. Measure your artwork (length x width).
  2. Order a frame of the same dimensions.

For example, for an A4 print (21x29cm), order an A4 frame. While the frame opening is 21x29cm, the inner edge (rebate) will overlap the artwork by about 0.5cm on each side to hold it securely.

If using a mount, order the frame to fit the mount’s outer size, not the artwork size.

Absolutely! You can order a variety of sizes, styles and mount colours in one go – with no minimum order value required.

This flexibility is great for:

  • Trying different designs
  • Framing multiple projects
  • Creating varied gallery walls

Many galleries and artists order mixed frames in one batch. Just keep an eye on your cart total, and feel free to experiment!

We offer over 300 frame styles, including a wide range of:

  • Colours – from neutrals to bold tones
  • Profiles – slim, wide and deep box frames
  • Finishes – wood, metallic, matte, glossy and rustic options

Whether you prefer a modern, classic or vintage look, we likely have a frame to match. Our collection is continuously updated to reflect current trends, ensuring a wide variety of choices.

Please note that not all styles are available in every size, but custom solutions can often be arranged.

Yes, we specialise in custom sized frames! If our standard sizes don’t fit your needs, you can order a bespoke frame by getting in touch with us. Send your required dimensions (and preferred style or finish) to sales@readymades.co, and we’ll provide a tailored solution and quote.

Once you've chosen a size and style, we’ll craft your frame to precise measurements. Custom sizes typically don’t carry a significant premium unless extremely large. We can make nearly any size within practical limits – usually up to 1x1m with glass for standard shipping, with larger frames requiring special handling.

Conservation framing, also known as museum-quality framing, uses techniques and materials that protect artwork from long-term damage and deterioration. It’s ideal for valuable, sentimental or original pieces you want to preserve for years. Key elements include:

  • Acid-free, lignin-free mounts and backing boards to prevent acid burn and discolouration.
  • UV-protective glazing to block harmful ultraviolet light that causes fading.
  • Archival hinging or non-destructive mounting techniques, with no glue or tapes that could harm the art.
  • Preventing direct contact between the artwork and the glazing to avoid moisture damage.
  • Sealing the frame package to protect from dust and insects.

Conservation framing is recommended for original art, limited edition prints and heirlooms. While it can be more expensive due to materials and labour, it offers peace of mind knowing your art is being preserved. For less valuable pieces, standard framing materials are perfectly fine and more cost-effective. If conservation framing is important to you, we can always provide it upon request.
